Rugestraße 9

This year springhouse is located in Rugestraße 9. The house dates from the Wilhelminian time and has four floors. It is situated in the south of Dresden between the central train station and Technical University of Dresden. On the upper end of Rugestrasse, you will find the former library of the university, now Thalia bookshop, and a high-rise building dating from 1965, the time of GDR.

The street was constructed in 1893 and originally named Bendemannstraße after painter Eduard Bendemann who taught as professor at Dresdner Kunstakademie from1838 until 1859. In 1940 the name was changed in Rugestraße due to the jewish ancestry of Eduard Bendemann.

Sophus Ruge (1831-1903) was a geographer. In 1874 he became chairholder of the geographic and ethnological institute at the polytechnic school.
